I manage two small (5 people) teams where everybody works remotely, and we have daily "stand-ups" using hangouts. They usually last just 10 minutes, and I find them very useful not just because of the info sharing, but because they help getting better team cohesion - which is difficult with remote work. They're well worth the small disruption of development activities.
