Mean while Pascal side steps this* entire aesthetic debate by letting you define the index range of an array as you see fit and did so years before UNIX convinced everyone that C was somehow a good idea.

Which is a terrible idea. It's like sidestepping the debate over whether to use spaces or tabs by using both.


C is spartan with syntax, and you could accomplish much the same thing with a macro. Of course, in C++ you could define your own arrays with their own indexing scheme.
