The title should be "What Happens to Older Developers Who Don't Keep Their Skills Up To Date".
No offense OldCoder, but that seems to be the root of the problem, leaving the workforce doesn't help either. I know quite a few 50+ developers who are doing fine, so I don't think it's the "old" so much. This can happen in any industry.
